The road from Belfast to Donegal is one of the loveliest drives on the island — but it is also a long one, and there is a particular moment, somewhere past Dungannon, when a good meal and a comfortable bed start to feel less like a luxury and more like the whole point of the trip. That moment tends to arrive right around Ballygawley, and it is no accident. Sitting where the A4 meets the A5 in the heart of County Tyrone, Ballygawley is the natural halfway point between the city and the coast — a little over an hour from Belfast, and roughly the same again on to Donegal town and Letterkenny.

It is exactly the sort of place you want to break the journey. And on Main Street, that is precisely what The Tailor's House was built to do.

The perfect place to break the journey

Most people driving the Belfast–Donegal corridor treat the middle of the trip as something to endure — a stretch of motorway and roundabout to get through before the good part begins. We would gently suggest a different approach: make the middle of the journey the best bit.

The Tailor's House is a premium restaurant with six boutique guest rooms, a characterful bar and a curated wine shop, all under one roof and minutes from the M1 and A4. Pull in for dinner, stay the night, enjoy an unhurried breakfast, and carry on to the coast rested rather than road-weary. Whether you are heading west for a weekend in Donegal or back east towards the city, we sit at the point on the map where a proper stop-off makes the most sense.

There is free parking on site and free WiFi in every room, so the practicalities of a road trip are quietly taken care of. What you will remember, though, is the food and the welcome.

Dinner worth stopping for

We are open for dining Thursday to Sunday, and the kitchen is the reason so many people now plan their journey around us rather than the other way round. The cooking is seasonal Irish food, beautifully presented, built on the best of local Tyrone produce — prime Irish beef, fresh seafood and vegetables that change with the year.

The dish we are best known for is our dry-aged steak, and there is a story behind it. Our own family butcher, Quinn's, has been in the trade for over 40 years across three generations, and the beef on your plate comes from that same family business just down the road. That is a level of control over quality — from the butcher's block to the grill — that very few restaurants can claim. Our ribeye, topped with an onion ring and garlic butter and served with peppercorn sauce, is the kind of thing that turns a refuelling stop into an occasion.

Menus change with the seasons, so it is always worth a look before you arrive. You can see what the kitchen is cooking right now on our menus page.

Six boutique rooms for the overnight

If you are driving the full length of the corridor, an overnight in the middle changes the whole character of the trip. Our six boutique guest rooms are a genuinely comfortable place to rest — warm, characterful and finished to a four-star standard, a world away from the anonymous roadside stop.

Booking a room also means you can properly enjoy the evening. A glass or two from our wine list, a leisurely dinner, and no clock-watching or long final leg in the dark. In the morning we serve breakfast at the weekend before you set off refreshed for the coast. Booking direct with us is always the best way to secure a room, and you will find our rooms and rates on the rooms page.

More than a stop-off

Because we are a restaurant, bar, wine shop and guest house all in one, it is easy to make an evening of it. Arrive early and browse the wine shop on Main Street for something to take on to Donegal, settle into the bar for a signature cocktail or a local craft beer, then move through to dinner. On a Sunday, our made-to-order Sunday lunch is a local favourite — every plate cooked to order, never a carvery — and a fine reason to time your journey for the weekend.

Plenty of travellers who first found us as a convenient halfway point now come back deliberately, coast trip or no coast trip. That is the highest compliment we can be paid.
